Gus Albright Scrapbooks: The Buffalo River

Identifier: MC 1295

Scope and Content Note

Gus Albright, one-time Arkansas Gazette sports columnist, created two scrapbooks with newspaper clippings, letters, maps, and other papers, pertaining to the controversy over development of the Buffalo River in the northern part of Arkansas.

The attempts by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s and 1960s to dam the river at Gilbert and Lone Rock met with a strong opposition from the National Park Service, various organizations such as the Ozark Society, the Arkansas Audubon Society, and the Nature Conservancy Society, the national and state government officials, and private citizens. In 1972, the Buffalo River was designated by the U.S. Congress as the first national river and became a part of the National Rivers System. There are also two publications in this collection: The Buffalo National River Canoeing Guide, The Ozark Society, 1991 and Buffalo National River, United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Richmond, Virginia, April 1963.
