Content Description

The collection contains 122 black-and-white photographic prints, most documenting the American lumber industry in the early 20th century. The bulk of the photographs are unidentified. Photographs with captions are: Image 8, “J. S. Betts Plant” (Ashburn, Georgia); Image 26, “J. S. Betts Plant”; Image 30, “White Boyne” (likely one of the White brothers associated with the Boyne City, Michigan lumber industry); Image 31, “Band saw damaged by a nail in a log. Lincoln, N.H. May 1907. J. E. Henry’s Mills.”; Image 35, “Stamps, Ark.” (an image of a lumberyard with a mill in the background); Image 43, “Carbon[or Carlon?]”; Image 50, “Stamps, Ark.” (an image of three men in a lumber yard); Image 56, “White Boyne”; Image 75, “Uncle Graham – Mare Kate”; and Image 81, “20,000 per year, Manager in Arkansas Lumber Plant” (an image of a man sitting on a pile of lumber).

Images 55-57 depict people in front of the offices of the Strable Manufacturing Co. (likely in Oakland, California or in Saginaw, Michigan). Images 70-72 depict a group of people, many of them in striped uniforms, in what may be a prison yard. Images 86-97 depict 1906 tornado damage in Meridian, Mississippi. Images 98-103 are of St. Augustine, Florida, including Castillo de San Marcos (98-99), the City Gates (100-101), and Hotel Ponce de Leon (102-103). Images 119-120 depict 1903 hurricane damage to Richards Baths on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in New Jersey. Bookseller-provided description indicated that among the unlabeled images in the collection are photographs of the Mississippi Lumber Company of Quitman, Mississippi and of the Arkansas Lumber Company of Warren, Arkansas.
