Biographical / Historical

The University of Arkansas was created through the Morrill Act of 1862 which provided for the creation of “land grant” institutions for the purpose of teaching agricultural and mechanical arts. In 1871, Arkansas passed legislation to realize this act and created the Arkansas Industrial University. In 1899, the name was changed to the University of Arkansas.

Initially, the university offered classes in agriculture, engineering (both required by the Morrill Act), and “classics” (general arts and sciences). In 1905, the College of Agriculture was separated from the rest of the university. In 1912, the colleges of liberal arts, sciences, and engineering were separated from one until the former two rejoined as the College of Arts and Sciences in 1915. Education came in 1917, law in 1924, graduate school in 1927, business in 1937, and nursing in 1953.
