Scope and Contents

The collection contains papers of literature scholar and professor Larry Vonalt that relate to his friendship with Donald Harington and to his study of Harington's writings. Collection materials include correspondence, interviews, writings, research notes and materials, teaching materials, and photographs. Among the materials included are a typescript copy of Harington's unpublished novel, A Work of Fiction; recordings of two interviews of Donald Harington conducted by Linda Hughes; and transcripts of interviews of Harington conducted by Hughes and by Vonalt.

Biographical / Historical

Larry Vonalt (1937-2005) was an American scholar and educator whose research focused on American literature.

Larry Paul Vonalt was born January 10, 1937, in Angola, Indiana to Eula Faye and Paul Christian Vonalt. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida, and taught at the University of Florida and Wesleyan University before joining the faculty of the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) in 1975. Vonalt was both a scholar of and a close friend of Arkansas novelist Donald Harington, who dedicated his 1996 novel Butterfly Weed to Vonalt.

Vonalt passed away December 26, 2005.

The Larry Vonalt Papers Related to Donald Harington were donated to Special Collections by Vonalt's widow, Elizabeth (Liz) Cummins Vonalt of Rolla, Missouri on July 7, 2006.

Separated Materials

Publications by Donald Harington that were received as part of this donation have been transferred to the Arkansas Collection.

Processing Information

Preliminary processing, including arrangement and rehousing, was done by Special Collections staff circa 2006-2015. Processing was completed and finding aid was created by Katrina Windon in February 2024.
