Biographical / Historical
In 1951, the University of Arkansas became the first land-grant institution to embark on an agricultural mission as part of Harry S. Truman’s Point Four Program. The Point Four Program called for American institutions to share scientific advances and industrial progress with underdeveloped areas. On May 17, 1951, The U of A entered into a contract with the government of Panama to provide advisors to Panamanian staff in the areas of agricultural education, agricultural research and agricultural extension. University of Arkansas professors travelled to Panama, spending up to two years at a time there. These University of Arkansas professors helped set-up Panamanian equivalents of experiment stations and cooperative extension, including 4-S clubs (the Panamanian version of 4-H clubs). This mission work continued until June 30, 1957.
