Biographical / Historical

Robert R. (Bob) Douglas (1924-2002) was an Arkansas journalist and educator.

Douglas was born October 4, 1924, to Marie Foster and Roy E. Douglas in Kensett, Arkansas. During World War II, he served in the Navy on the USS Essex. He then attended the University of Arkansas, where he worked as managing editor of the Arkansas Traveler and interviewed Silas Hunt for a Feb. 3, 1948 cover story announcing Hunt's enrollment as the first Black student in the University of Arkansas School of Law. After graduating in 1948, Douglas was hired as a general assignment reporter for the Arkansas Gazette; early in his career, he was one of the leaders of the 1949-1950 News Guild strike. Over the next three decades he would go on to work in a number of roles at the Gazette, including as Managing Editor, a position he was appointed to in 1972.

In 1981, Douglas resigned from the Gazette to serve as Chair of the University of Arkansas Department of Journalism, where he served as faculty advisor for the Arkansas Traveler and helped to establish the Master of Arts in Journalism degree program. He stepped down as department chair in 1988 and retired from the University in 1991, but continued to write newspaper columns and to serve as a legal consultant in cases related to libel, defamation, and freedom of the press. Douglas passed away April 7, 2002.
