Old Main was the first permanent building to be erected on the Arkansas Industrial University campus and its exterior was finished in 1875. Its name was originally "the University building" but was officially named "University Hall" in 1895. The moniker “Old Main” became more popular throughout the 1900s and the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees changed the building's name to "Old Main" in 1991. Old Main is the oldest building on the University of Arkansas Campus and the only one remaining that was built in the 19th century. The building was closed due to safety concerns in the 1980s and a fundraising campaign was launched for renovations which led to Old Main Rededication events in 1991. In 2005, a clock donated by the U of A Class of 2005 was installed as part of the "Campaign for the Twenty-First Century". Old Main houses the dean's offices of the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences as well as other academic departments and Giffels Auditorium on the second floor.
