Biographical / Historical

The University of Arkansas celebrated its centennial anniversary in 1971. In 1871, Governor O. A. Hadley of Arkansas approved the creation of the Arkansas Industrial University, a land grant institution whose creation was enabled by The Land Grant Act passed by Congress in 1862 and signed by President Lincoln. In 1899, the university's name was changed to the University of Arkansas by the General Assembly. Dr. David Wiley Mullins became president of the university in 1960 and together with the Centennial Steering Committee, began organizing and preparing for the Centennial Convocation for the university in 1966, which took place in 1971. He also established "The Second Century Committee" in 1970, comprised of university alumni, business leaders, and local educators, to make suggestions for how the university should accomplish its mission during its second century of existence.
