The papers, accumulated by Sara Murphy, pertain to her professional and political activities, and consist of correspondence, press releases, promotional/publicity material, reports, pamphlets and brochures, newsletters, programs and announcements, speeches/presentation papers, newspaper and magazine clippings, miscellaneous published and unpublished material, handwritten notes, and several photographs featuring Sara Murphy.

Biographical Note

Sara Murphy was born in Wartrace, Tennessee, on June 17, 1924. She attended George Peabody College at Nashville, Tennessee, where she received a bachelor's degree in history and English, and later a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and an Ed.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Sara Murphy first got involved with women's political networks in the early 1960s when she worked with the Panel of American Women, an organization that conducted programs on integration across the country. She was the founder and coordinator of the Panel of American Women in Arkansas, which addressed racial and religious prejudice after the Little Rock integration crisis. She was also active in the Arkansas Women's Network, working on women's rights issues. Sara Murphy was one of the original organizers of Peace Links in Arkansas and served on both the state and national Peace Links boards. In addition to her Peace Links activities, she was an educational and management consultant. Sara Murphy, an Associate Director for Communication and Dissemination for the Arkansas Department of Education, was also an Executive Director of Arkansas Education Renewal Consortium. She also organized the Women's Educational Development Institute to promote non-traditional education. Sara Murphy died April 15, 1995.
