Biographical / Historical

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arkansas strives for excellence in research, teaching and service in chemistry—the central science. In 1893, the two-story Science Hall was erected for the departments of Chemistry and Physics. The building accommodated about 100 students and featured lecture rooms, laboratories, and chemical supply and weighing rooms. Albert Ernest Menke was one of the first professors in the department, listed as Professor of Chemistry and Physics in the 1897-1898 university catalogue. The following year, William Burdelle Bentley served as associate Professor of Chemistry and Physics. Soon after, Charles Geiger Carroll served as the Profesor of Chemistry and on the University Senate for several years, typically with one adjunct professor in the department. In 1905, a new chemistry building was established with laboratories for qualitative and quantitative analyasis, organic and physical chemistry, private offices, a balance room, and the department for state fertizlier analysis on the first floor. The second floor had the general lecture room which accommodated over one hundred and fifty students, a general chemistry laboratory and a basement with general storage space, room for the gas machine, and furnaces. In 1918, Harrison Hale became Professor of Chemistry and was also the chariman of the Research Committee of the University Senate for several years. A new chemistry building was completed in 1935 and new facilities have been added over time. The department has prided itself on attaining esteemed profesors in the field since its inception, including notable professors and researchers such as, Dr. Arthur Fry, Dr. Lester Howick, Dr. Edward S. Amis, and Dr. George Blyholder to name a few. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry continues to be a leader in its field of research and faculty has presented at numerous conferences and published dozens of important papers on related topics. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is housed in the historic Chemistry Building (CHEM) with laboratories in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Building (CHBC).
