This collection contains various items pertaining to Professor Emeritus Frank L. Farmer's work on rural sociology as a professor and researcher at the University of Arkansas. This includes correspondence, his authored works such as his master's thesis, healthcare initiatives he worked to enact and maintain, projects he approved through HUD, information pertaining to grants related to his work, reports, plans, and surveys about the populations he served, published journals, university files, international trips, photos, and slides. Original folder titles were maintained during processing.

Biographical / Historical

Frank L. Farmer is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Arkansas. He graduated from Central High School in 1970. Farmer earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Penn State University in 1986, receiving training in the areas of demography, rural community development, applied sociology and research methods and statistics. He received his bachelor's degree in anthropology from Fort Lewis College in 1981 and a master's degree in sociology from the University of Arkansas in 1981. Farmer primarily focused on research work at Arkansas, specifically infant and child health, environmental issues, as well as social science research methods. In addition to his research, Farmer spent time in the classroom, teaching a wide range of sociology courses. He has published widely in those areas, having written more than 100 journal articles, book chapters, professional papers and scientific reports. He has visited over a dozen foreign countries, focusing on rural sociology improvements such as his 1998 trip to Kenya where he assisted in a U.S. Agency for International Development project focusing on adding micronutrients (Vitamin A and Iodine) to the food supply.
