Scope and Contents
This collection contains various items pertaining to the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, particularly during Professor James S. Chase's time as the group's faculty adviser. It includes scrapbooks, correspondence, a proposal for a history doctoral program, litigation information regarding a financial gift to the history department, newsletters, and photos. The collection has a small portion of materials prior to 1992 and the bulk dates are 1992-2000. Original folder titles were maintained during processing.

Biographical / Historical
Phi Alpha Theta is a national honor society for students and professors of history. It was founded at the University of Arkansas in 1921. James S. Chase was a member of the University of Arkansas faculty form 1968 until his retirement in 1999. He was a professor of history, a longtime member of the Faculty Senate, and worked tirelessly to improve the campus for faculty members. Chase served as faculty adviser for the Alpha Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta and established the annual initiation and awards banquet for the group. He also founded the Ozark Historical Review and edited the History Newsletter. He was honored in 1995 with the Fulbright College of Arts and Science Outstanding Advisor Award and the Associate Student Government named him “Teacher of the Year” in 1994. He passed away on July 31, 2017.
