Biographical / Historical
The University of Arkansas Fine Arts Center was designed by internationally renowned architect, Edward Durrell Stone. Opened in 1951, it was one of the first educational facilities in the country to combine Fine Arts under one roof. Originally, the departments of Architecture, Art, Dramatic Art and Dance, and Music were all housed in the building. The Fine Arts Gallery occupied the space between the University Theatre and Concert Hall. The building closed for renovation in 1992 and reopened in February 1993. The building began another major renovation in 2022.
In addition to designing the building, Stone also designated pieces of original furniture as well as a series of eight mobiles by the inventor of the medium, the renowned sculptor Alexander Calder. Several unique furniture pieces were designed for the project as well. Stone designed the “plough-back” chairs and chaise lounges. The chair was built by Fulbright Industries in Fayetteville, owned by the family of J.W. Fulbright, for whom the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences is named.
