Scope and Contents

This collection contains meeting minutes notes, agendas, reports, studies, correspondence, and memos related to the university’s Athletics Committee. Subjects covered include: student athlete policies, gender equality in intercollegiate sports, enrollment statistics, team budget comparisons, student-athlete support programs, athletic schedules, and the university’s admittance to the SEC. The collection has a small portion of materials from 2016-2017, and the bulk dates of the collection are 1989-1993. Original folder titles were maintained during processing.

Biographical / Historical

The Athletics Committee’s function is to oversee the Athletic Department’s compliance with academic standards established by the University, and advises the department on matters of academic concern. Membership is comprised of seven members of the university’s faculty, along with two students, the University’s representatives to the SEC and NCAA, the Director of Athletics, the Executive Director of Athletics, and a non-voting member from the office of the Vice chancellor for Finance and Administration. The committee is part of the University of Arkansas Faculty Senate which was established in 1996, but was headed by faculty also prior to the establishment of the Faculty Senate.

The University of Arkansas Athletics Committee Records was donated to the Special Collections Department by various faculty members with the bulk of the collection donated by Alberta Bailey of Fayetteville, AR.
