Biographical / Historical

Campus governance bodies have evolved throughout the history of the University. In the early days of the University, the President would call meetings of the faculty to advise on some matters. In 1912, campus governance was divided between the larger University Senate and the smaller overarching University council. Specific membership requirements for the different groups changed frequently through the years. The basic membership of the University Senate was upper-level administration and the majority of faculty members. The University Council was made up of administrators and a few faculty representatives. In 1955, the name of the University council changed to University Senate Council. Then in 1976, the Board of Trustees approved a policy to establish a new structure in Board Policy 810.1 The policy has been updated several times. Beginning in 1977, there were three separate governance groups: Campus Faculty, Non-academic Staff Council, and Student Council. A few representatives from each of these groups would serve on the overarching Campus Council. There was another distinct change in 1996, establishing the Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, and Student Senate, each comprised of elected representatives. A Smaller number of representatives from each one of the three groups met together to form the overarching Campus Council. The full Campus Faculty continued to meet as a distinct group once a semester.
