Content Description

The collection consists of a scrapbook that belonged to Walter S. Gifford; it contains photographs of an October 1940 General Education Board trip to Arkansas, including images of the Lake View and Plum Bayou resettlement projects.

Photographs from the Education Board trip to Arkansas include images of an unidentified “one teacher school”; Stony Point School (Washington County); Cave Springs; “No. 15, The least profitable boiler producing farm”; the Plum Bayou resettlement project; a rice mill in Stuttgart; the Lake View resettlement project; Bear Creek Lake Recreation Area; the Cotton Research Station in Marianna; a Black school in Marianna; the Lee Wilson Plantation in Mississippi County; the home of Black tenant farmers Henry and Annie Riley in Mississippi County; and cotton fields and farm laborers in the Delta region.

Individuals identified in Arkansas photographs include University of Arkansas President J. William Fulbright; “Mr. Rockefeller”; an unnamed Black owner of a filling station in Menifee; C. O. Brannen; General Education Board President Raymond B. Fosdick; “Miss Latura”; “Mr. Rhodes”; Jessie Wright Cartright; Jackson Davis; Cornell University Provost Albert R. Mann; Arkansas State Department of Education Director of Negro Education Ed McCuistion; “Mr. Crain”; and tenant farmer Annie Riley.

Other locations identified include Gifford’s Thimble Farm estate (Greenwich, Conn.); Miami, Fla.; the Great Smoky Mountains; Dubois, Wyo.; Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.); North Castle, N.Y.; Lake Winnipeg, Canada; Brimfield, Mass.; Manitoba, Canada; Jeffersonville, Vt.; and Yale University (New Haven, Conn.). Subjects include fishing; canoeing; Harvard soccer games; sailing; and a rodeo in Dubois, Wyo. Individuals identified include Walter S. Gifford; Gifford’s sons, Walter S. Gifford, Jr. and Richard (Dick) Gifford; Leroy King; and John Brooks.

Biographical / Historical

Walter Sherman Gifford (1885-1966) was an American businessman and diplomat.

Gifford graduated from Harvard in 1905, and then began to work for Western Electric, a subsidiary of AT&T; he became president of AT&T in 1925, and later served as Chairman of the Board. In 1935, he was elected as a trustee on the General Education Board (later known as the Rockefeller Foundation), which included among its aims improving education for Black southerners. He served in several appointed governmental positions, including as Director of the Council of National Defense during World War I; Director of the Organization on Unemployment Relief from 1931-1932; and Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1950-1953.
