Content Description
Scrapbook created by Mary Virginia Ferguson related to the campaign to save the Buffalo River and to her service on the Governor's Committee on Stream Preservation. The bulk of the scrapbook's contents are newspaper clippings; also included is an April 1963 "Suggested Buffalo National River" map created by the Ozark Society; correspondence from the Ozark Society, including a letter from Secretary Evangeline Archer to Ferguson; correspondence from Charlie Johnson to members of the Governor's Committee on Stream Preservation; and a membership roster of the Governor's Committee on Stream Preservation.

Biographical / Historical
Mary Virginia Ferguson (1927-2014) was a founding member of the Ozark Society, an advocate for the preservation of the Buffalo River, a member of the Arkansas Governor’s Committee on Stream Preservation, and a Conway High School history teacher. She was born March 20, 1927, to Virginia Warren Robins and Frank E. Robins, Jr., of Conway, Arkansas. She earned a Bachelor’s in history from George Washington University and a Master’s in history from the State College of Arkansas before becoming a teacher at Conway High School. Ferguson was active in a number of community organizations, including the Ozark Society, the Arkansas Audubon Society, the Arkansas Council of Garden Clubs, the Conway League of Women Voters, and the Faulkner County Historical Society. She and her husband, Hubert Lee Ferguson, had three children. She passed away May 8, 2014, in Conway, Arkansas.
