Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 36 letters written by John M. Page to his mother and to his sister, Maria, while Page was serving in the Union Army (first with the Long Island 3rd Detachment, Company B, and later with the 7th Massachusetts Battery, in the corps of Captain Newman W. Storer) from 1863-1865 during the U.S. Civil War. Topics include discussions of his experiences at camp and in battle at Mobile, Alabama; finances; family, particularly an Uncle Smith; and requests for items to be sent to him. 16 letters were written while Page was in Arkansas in De Valls Bluff and St. Charles. Others were written while Page was in Long Island, New York; Morganza, Lousiana; New Orleans, Louisiana; Fort Gaines, Alabama; and Mobile, Alabama.

Biographical / Historical

John McLary Page was born in Tamworth, New Hampshire around 1844 to Charles and Abigail (Abby) Page. He served in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War from at least 1863-1865, first with the Long Island 3rd Detachment, Company B, and later with the 7th Massachusetts Battery, in the corps of Captain Newman W. Storer. Following the war, he worked as a carpenter in Chelsea, Massachusetts, where his mother was a boardinghouse keeper. Page died of drowning at the age of 33 on July 20, 1877, in Chelsea, Massachusetts.
