Content Description

Photograph album created by Mary Njeri Ng'ayu, an international college student from Kenya, while she was in the United States between 1960-1963.

The album includes a number of photographs on the campus of Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, including of the Cox Administration Building, dormitories, the Library and Fine Arts Building, a graduation ceremony, and a parade.

Other scenes in Little Rock include the “colored entrance” to a building with Cook’s Paints and the Lafayette Hotel in the background; Hall Senior High School; a football game; Houston-Bigelow Bus Line buses; Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church; Mark’s Chapel United Methodist Church; and a man standing on Arch Street with a Crow-Burlingame Co. auto parts store in the background.

Other photograph subjects include the airport in Nairobi, Kenya; Ng’ayu’s flight from Nairobi to New York; New York, New York; dancing; and Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Njeri Ng'ayu was a Kenyan woman who, as a college student, studied in the United States as part of the Kennedy Airlift program.

In 1960, she was a student at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, and was sponsored by the African American Students Foundation. She later transferred to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she was in the senior class in 1964 and studied Liberal Arts Studies and Sociology. In Kenya, she had studied at the Royal College in Nairobi.
