Scope and Contents

The collection contains materials related to and collected by the family of Harry Bell Stanley, including his wife, Alta Kenyon Stanley; his brother, Samuel Willard Stanley; and his son, Harry Kenyon Stanley. The bulk of the materials pertain to Harry Bell Stanley's life in Weiner, Arkansas, or to his son Harry K. Stanley's military service during World War II and career in civil aviation. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, military records, newsletters, and other materials. Although collection photographs are primarily family photographs, also included are images of Weiner, Arkansas circa 1890-1920, including photographs of duck hunting, rice farming, the Weiner Depot, and the Weiner Hotel.

Biographical / Historical

Harry Bell Stanley (1878-1964) was born in South Dakota, and then lived in Weiner, Poinsett County, Arkansas, before moving to Tustin, California. He married Alta Kenyon (1889-1961) in 1913. Alta Kenyon, originally from Iowa, was the daughter of John Kenyon and Franc Hunt. Harry B. and Alta Stanley had a son, Harry Kenyon Stanley (1918-1973), who served as a pilot in World War II and went on to have a career in civil aviation before he, his wife Ruth, and their three children died in a plane crash in 1973.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Stanley Family Papers were donated to Special Collections by Alan C. and Nancy Lee Batchelder of Seaview, Washington in September 2011. Alan Batchelder is the grandson of Samuel Willard Stanley and son of Marian Hatfield Stanley Batchelder.
