Biographical / Historical

R. Porter Giles, the subject of the collection's correspondence, is likely Robert Porter Giles (1877-1956). His parents were Robert Smith and Minnie Louise Porter Giles.

Robert Smith Giles was born February 26, 1851, in Geauga, Ohio. He married Minnie Louise Porter July 10, 1876, in Cuyahoga, Ohio. In addition to Robert Porter Giles, the couple's children included Caroyline Louise Giles (1887-1928), likely the "Baby Louise" he refers to in his letters. Robert Smith Giles passed away October 3, 1928, in New London, Ohio.
