Biographical / Historical
John R. Jelks (1814-1875) served as the sheriff of Madison County, Tennessee, and then as the first sheriff of Crockett County, Tennessee before moving to Arkansas, where he served as sheriff of Woodruff County, Arkansas in the 1860s and 1870s.
Jelks was born November 3, 1814, in Wake County, North Carolina to Mary H. Curtis and Jarrett M. Jelks. He moved to Madison County, Tennessee as a child. In the 1830s, he married Emma Reese. Following his wife's death, Jelks remarried, to Mary Elizabeth Lane, around 1845. He passed away July 13, 1875, and is buried in Union Cemetery in Woodruff County, Arkansas.
