Scope and Contents

The collection primarily consists of the personal correspondence of Mona Buercklin and John Irving McClurkin, Jr. Correspondence includes letters from Paul M. Wheelis to Mona Buercklin written while Wheelis was a student at the University of Arkansas and later in training at the Reserve Officer's Training Camp in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; correspondence from John Irving McClurkin, Jr. to Mona Buercklin while he was a student at the University of Arkansas and at Stanford University; and correspondence from Mona Buercklin to McClurkin while she was a high school student in Ashdown, Arkansas, and later a student at Magnolia A&M and at the University of Arkansas. Other correspondence includes a 1934 Newport High School graduation invitation from Fay Ernestine Hinson and a 1937 Ashdown High School graduation invitation from Genevieve Giacoma. Topics discussed in correspondence include campus life, family, and World War II. Other collection materials include photographs, a newspaper clipping, and ephemera.

Biographical / Historical

Mona Mae Buercklin was born January 13, 1914, to Myrtle Mae Hinson and William David Buercklin in Minturn, Arkansas. She attended Magnolia A&M before earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas. She later worked as an English teacher. She passed away October 1, 1988.

John Irving McClurkin, Jr. was born December 20, 1913, to May Cazort and John Irving McClurkin in Conway, Arkansas. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas, a master’s from the University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. from Stanford University; among other professional positions, he served as chair of the Biology Department of Randolph-Macon College in Virginia.

Buercklin and McClurkin were married June 1, 1938, in Union County, Arkansas. The couple had two children, Mona Jean (Jeanie) and John. Following Mona McClurkin’s death, John Irving McClurkin, Jr. later remarried, to Sylvanie Grisham in 1990. He passed away February 2, 2006.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Mona Buercklin and John Irving McClurkin Papers were donated to Special Collections by Desmond Walls Allen of Conway, Arkansas on July 7, 2007. Allen acquired the materials from Hutch's Auction House in Twin Grove, Arkansas.
