Content Description
The collection consists primarily of correspondence from Clyde Richmond to Nema Wright Richmond; letters begin as courtship letters, and continue after their marriage. Letters from 1940 were primarily written from Civilian Conservation Corps Camp 3795 in West Fork, Arkansas; the bulk of 1941 correspondence was written from Kansas City, Missouri. In 1942, Clyde Richmond began working at the California Ship Building Company in Long Beach, California, and subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard; correspondence reflects these activities. Correspondence from 1943-1945 includes frequent mention of Richmond's service in the Coast Guard during World War II; he was primarily stationed in California.
Also included are biographical sketches of Clyde and Nema Richmond; copies of family photographs; and an overview of the correspondence collection compiled by the donor, Allen Richmond.

Biographical / Historical
Clyde Clifford Richmond (1919-2007) was a World War II veteran and Arkansas businessman.
Richmond was born November 2, 1919. He served at the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp 3795 in West Fork, Arkansas in 1940. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, and attended the U.S. Maritime Service Officer's School in Neptune Beach. He married Nema Dean Wright on December 19, 1944, in Booneville, Arkansas.
Following his Coast Guard service, Richmond worked as a sales manager at W. T. Rawleigh Co. in West Memphis, Arkansas, and served on the President’s Development Council of Harding University.
Richmond passed away June 10, 2007, in Marion, Arkansas.

Some letters exhibit water damage that obscures portions of text; in some cases, either the creator or a family member rewrote over top of the obscured original words to make portions more legible.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Clyde Richmond Correspondence to Nema Wright Richmond was donated to Special Collections by Richmond's son, Allen Richmond of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on October 20, 2022.
Additional materials (Box 1, Folder 14) were donated by Richmond on October 31, 2022.
