Scope and Contents
The collection contains manuscripts, correspondence, and other materials related to the career of writer Jack Butler. Manuscripts are primarily poems and short stories written while Butler lived in Arkansas; also included is a draft of Butler's 1986 novel Jujitsu for Christ and early notes and drafts of novels Nightshade and Living in Little Rock with Miss Little Rock. Correspondents include John Ciardi, Dana Gioia, Miller Williams, Irv Broughton, and Congressman Tommy F. Robinson.

Biographical / Historical
Jack Butler (1944-) is an American writer. Butler earned bachelor's degrees from Central Missouri State College in 1966, and an MFA from the University of Arkansas in 1979. His works include the novels Jujitsu for Christ and Living in Little Rock with Miss Little Rock, a Pulitzer Prize nominee.

Arrangement
Materials are arranged by format and by topic. The poetry manuscripts in Box 1, Folders 5-13 were received arranged by folder based on where Butler was living at the time he was writing, and are thus roughly chronological; this original order has been maintained, and original folder labels have been placed at the front of each of these folders when applicable.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Jack Butler Papers were donated to Special Collections by Jack Butler of Little Rock, Arkansas, in January 1987.
