Scope and Contents

The collection contains photographs taken by Landis Seawell Bennett, primarily of Arkansas locations and events. Locations include the University of Arkansas campus (Fayetteville, Ark.); Mt. Sequoyah (Fayetteville, Ark.); Shipley’s Bakery (Fayetteville, Ark.); the Fayetteville Square (Fayetteville, Ark.); Marianna, Ark.; Monte Ne (Benton County, Ark.); Cane Hill, Ark.; Eureka Springs, Ark.; Berryville, Ark.; Little Rock, Ark.; White Rock Mountain (Winslow, Ark.); and Hollister, Mo. Subjects include University commencement ceremonies, Senior Walk, Agri Day and Homecoming celebrations, and campus scenes; and agriculture, including cotton fields and oat harvesting. Individuals identified include Louise Bennett, Rev. James Warthen Workman, K. R. Clark, K. B. Roy, R. K. Bent, Pauline Keys, Gov. Carl E. Bailey, and Arnold Simpson. Also included is a photographic portrait of Louise and Landis Bennett.

Access copies of the original 35mm nitrate negatives exist in two forms: Contact sheets (found in Box 1) were ordered by Special Collections staff from Collier Photo in 2006; digital scans (600 dpi tiffs) of negatives were created by Digital Services in September 2022, and are stored on Special Collections' preservation server.

Access Restrictions Apply: Access to original nitrate negatives in Box 2 is restricted for preservation reasons. Digital access copies (600 dpi tiffs) of all negatives are available to view in the Reading Room, and contact prints are available in Box 1.

Biographical / Historical

Landis Seawell Bennett (1908-2001) was an agricultural scholar and professional photographer.

After earning a PhD in plant breeding from West Virginia University, Bennett worked at the University of Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station as an associate geneticist in the 1930s. He later went on to work at North Carolina State University as a professor in the Department of Agronomy from 1941-1946 and Head of the Industrial Extension Service from 1946-1969. Bennett also worked as a professional photographer in New York and in North Carolina.

Arrangement

Materials are arranged by negative group numbers assigned either by the creator or one of his family members. Within each negative group, materials have been organized by format. Group numbers are not consecutive; for instance, there are negative groups 2, 3, and 5 but no groups 1 or 4.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Landis Seawell Bennett Photograph Collection was donated to Special Collections by Bennett's daughter, Ann M. Rogers of Durham, North Carolina, in 2004.

Existence and Location of Copies

Digital scans (600 dpi tiffs) of negatives were created by Digital Services in September 2022, and are stored on Special Collections' preservation server.
