Biographical / Historical

Sarah McKee Burnside (1930-2007) was a Fayetteville, Arkansas resident engaged in civic service, community theater, and community organizations. She married Wade Walker Burnside, Jr. in 1953. She earned a master's degree in drama from the University of Arkansas in 1987. In 2003, the Northwest Arkansas Women's Coalition recognized her as a "History Making Woman."

In 1984, Burnside was appointed as one of the inaugural members of the Fayetteville Arts Center Board, which was established to plan a fine arts center to be located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The work of the Board, in combination with the University of Arkansas Performing Arts Committee, led to the formation of the University of Arkansas/City of Fayetteville Arts Center Council, Inc. non-profit in 1986. The group's work ultimately led to the establishment of what is now known as the Walton Arts Center.
