Content Description
The collection contains film recordings of home videos created by the family of Mary Frances Drake Cooley, as well as VHS and DVD access copies of the film recordings.
Footage is primarily of children and other family members, and also includes footage of cityscapes and landscapes taken from a moving vehicle. According to the donor, footage includes a Southern Methodist University vs University of Arkansas football game (likely the football game that occurs around 58:38 on the DVD); the construction of the Lake Fort Smith dam (beginning at 4:55); and a Franklin Delano Roosevelt speech in Little Rock (likely the political event with footage beginning around 9:18).

Biographical / Historical
Mary Frances Drake Cooley (1911-1993) attended the University of Arkansas between 1929-1930. She married Wade Hampton Cooley; the couple had at least three children, Tom Cooley, Susie Pender, and Jane Henline. Mary Frances Drake Cooley passed away January 4, 1993, in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Mary Frances Drake Cooley Film Recordings were donated to Special Collections by Sue M. Cooley of Fort Smith, Arkansas, on June 22, 1993. The recordings originally belonged to Cooley's mother-in-law, Mary Frances Drake Cooley.
Existence and Location of Copies
Film reels were converted to a VHS tape by Bedford Camera & Video in 2001; VHS tape was digitized to a DVD by the University of Arkansas Libraries Multimedia Services in 2005. At the time of processing, an mp4 file was ripped from the DVD using Handbrake; digital file is stored on Special Collections' preservation server and is available to view in the Reading Room.

Some original film reels appear to have either been discarded at the time the materials were converted to VHS in 2001 or spliced together onto a single, unlabeled reel; at the time of processing, the collection contained only two film reels (Items 1-2).
