Biographical / Historical

Dr. E. F. Ellis was an Arkansas physician who practiced in Washington County for more than 60 years, including working at the Fayetteville City Hospital from its opening in 1912 until his death in 1957.

Edward Forrest Ellis was born on August 19, 1863 to Edward Sylvanus Ellis and Martha Jane Strearns Ellis in St. Clair County, Missouri. He earned his medical degree from Missouri Medical College in 1885, and then went on to practice in Hindsville, Arkansas; in Springdale, Arkansas; and in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Ellis served as president of the Arkansas Medical Society, as president of the Frisco Medical Association, and as Chairman of the Executive Committee for the Arkansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, as well as served on the Arkansas Board of Health, among other professional and civic roles.

Ellis passed away August 7, 1957.

Materials are arranged by format. Ellis maintained his cash day books chronologically; the patient ledgers each include an index at the front that is organized by patient last name.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The E. F. Ellis Papers were donated to Special Collections by Susan Chadick in 2010.
