Biographical / Historical
In 2012, Hiroshima University commemorated the 80th anniversary of their rebuilding by sending “atomic bombed roof tiles” as a gesture of peace. The roof tiles were collected from a riverbed near ground zero. The tiles are meant to serve as a memorial for those killed as a result of the bombing on August 6, 1945, and with Hiroshima University’s “wholehearted wish for the realization of a world free of war and nuclear weapons.” The University of Arkansas was contacted specifically because the University of Arkansas Libraries donated two books to Hiroshima University in 1951 as they worked to rebuild their university and their library.
