Biographical Note
The Extension work in Johnson County began in 1911 and its main purpose was a close cooperation with the local farmers. The first county agent, R. P. Walton, was sent out to promote among the farmers new methods and projects recommended by the University of Arkansas College of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture. The first Home Demonstration Agent, Bird Dunlap, started introducing then recently discovered methods of home canning. From these modest beginnings, the Extension work has grown and reached almost every farm family in the county with the aim of bringing about a better way of living for rural families.
