Content Description

The collection consists primarily of photographic slides documenting Viola C. Kerr's family, home, and activities in Fayetteville, Arkansas, as well as her travels in locations including Arkansas, Arizona, Missouri, California, Michigan, and Canada. Included are images from University of Arkansas Homecoming celebrations and the University of Arkansas 1968 spring commencement ceremony, of Beaver Lake and Dam, and of Expo 67 in Montreal, Canada. Post offices are a common subject of the photographs. Also included in the collection is a watercolor painting of Fayetteville, viewed from Mt. Sequoyah, by Kerr.

Biographical / Historical

Viola C. Kerr (1892-1987) was an Arkansas painter. She was born January 17, 1892. She and her husband, Fred L. Kerr, a longtime University of Arkansas registrar, lived in Fayetteville at 95 S. Duncan. In the 1930s, Viola Kerr served as president and later secretary-treasurer of the Arkansas Water Color Society. In 1986, Viola Kerr moved to Phoenix, Arizona to live near her daughter, Dr. Margaret (Peggy) L. Kerr. Viola Kerr passed away June 11, 1987.

Slides were received in two metal boxes, each containing a grid identifying each slot's contents (these grids are now stored in Box 1, Folder 17). The majority of the slides were labeled alphanumerically. This original order has been retained, and alphanumeric ranges are noted within folder titles when applicable.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Viola C. Kerr painting was donated by Guy M. Kinman of Richmond, Virginia on May 15, 2015. The photographic slides were acquired by Special Collections prior to 2004; the slides were identified as pertaining to Kerr based on subjects and identified individuals and locations, including her home at 65 S. Duncan St. in Fayetteville.
