Biographical / Historical

Elizabeth “Bettie” Barnes Messner was born on May 5, 1918 in Fayetteville, AR. She has many family ties to the University of Arkansas. Her uncle was Vol Walker, whom Vol Walker Hall is named after. Her mother served as house mother for Carnall Hall after the passing of Bettie’s father. Bettie lived with her mother in Carnall Hall during her middle school and high school years. Bettie was very active while she attended the University of Arkansas. She was the first female to be elected business manager of the Arkansas Traveler. She served as president of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, president of Pan Hellenic Council, and president of Pi Kappa, a women’s professional journalism society. She was also members of Octagon, an honorary organization for outstanding senior women, and Blackfriars, the national honorary fraternity for drama. She graduated in 1938 with a B.A. in journalism. She married George Messner and had six children, living most of her married life in Atlanta, GA, where she was an active member of her church and community, volunteering at many organizations. She remained a life long supporter of the U of A. In 2005, Michael and Jenny Messner set up an endowed scholarship to honor Michael’s mother, the Elizabeth Barnes Messner ’38 Scholarship in Journalism. Bettie died on September 17, 2009.
