Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the personal papers of John S. White, including materials related to his time as a Carroll County, Arkansas sheep farmer. Materials include photographs of White's property near Metalton, Arkansas; writings by White, including accounts of his life in the Ozarks and of his experience as a child in Texas during World War I and the 1918 influenza epidemic; and financial and property records.

Biographical / Historical

John S. White (1908-1999) was a writer and university administrator who worked as a sheep farmer near Metalton, Carroll County, Arkansas during the 1940s.

John Sweatt White was born August 25, 1908 to Theodore Martin White and Mary Julia Hoagland White in Grandfalls, Texas. During the 1940s, John White and his wife, Vida, moved to Carroll County, Arkansas. They later moved back to Texas, where John White worked as a registrar at the University of Texas at El Paso. White passed away October 10, 1999 in Odessa, Texas.
