Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two copies (a draft and a final version) of William H. Heath's memoirs related to his service in the 33rd Missouri Infanty during the U. S. Civil War and to his experiences with Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, entitled Hours With Grant. Also included is a newspaper clipping related to a reunion of the 33rd Missouri Infantry, and a published booklet regarding Maryland's commemoration of the centennial of the Civil War.

Hours With Grant begins in 1847 with a brief account of Heath's childhood in Illinois; the bulk of the manuscript relates to his experiences in the Civil War, including the Battle of Helena, the Battle of Fort Henry, and the Siege of Corinth. Other topics discussed include Heath's attendance at the Lincoln-Douglass debate; General Grant's staff; and the funeral of Horace Greeley.

Biographical / Historical

William H. Heath was an officer in the 33rd Missouri Infantry of the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War; he began as a Major and reached the rank of Colonel. Heath grew up in Illinois.
