Biographical / Historical
The Daughters of the American Colonists, Major Brian Pendleton Chapter was established April 2, 1927 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The group began as an unaffiliated club, "The Colonial Daughters," in 1924. The first three members of the local group to be approved by the national organization and become official chapter members were Lillian Gregson, Margaret Dunaway Thompson, and Marion Lenoir Ratliff. In addition to social activities, members engage in volunteer and civic activities, particularly related to veterans and to the establishment of historical markers. Membership is limited to women of age 18 or older with U.S. citizenship, and potential members are required to document that they descend from residents of what is now the United States of America when it was governed as colonies, and that those ancestors had served in specific roles or engaged in certain activities prior to July 4, 1776, such as serving in a colonial military, serving as founder or trustee of a North American college, being a physician or surgeon by profession, or signing the Declaration of Independence or the Oath of Allegiance to Great Britain.
