Biographical / Historical

Bernis Eugene Duke (1929-2020) was an Arkansas College athlete and Oral Roberts University tennis coach.

Duke was born April 14, 1929, in Evening Shade, Arkansas. While an undergraduate at Arkansas College, he participated in the basketball, tennis, and boxing programs; he was later inducted into the Arkansas College Hall of Fame. In 1954, he was drafted into the U.S. Army; following his military service, he began his coaching career at Newport High School in Newport, Arkansas. In 1967, he became Oral Roberts University's first tennis coach, a position he held until his retirement in 1999. Duke was inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 2002, as well inducted into the Oklahoma Tennis Hall of Fame.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Bernis Duke Papers were donated to Special Collections by Bernis Duke of Tulsa, Oklahoma in December 2007. Biographical information sent by Duke to the Head of Special Collections in 2008 has also been included in the collection.
