Content Description

The collection consists of interviews conducted by William David Spier as part of research for his 1974 doctoral dissertation, "Farming and Mining Experience: Independence County, Arkansas, 1900-1925." Interviews are on seven audio cassette tapes, two of which are accompanied by transcripts. Those interviewed include Mrs. Y. M. Massey; Jim McTeague of Batesville, who was a former miner; Mr. and Mrs. Owen Fetzer of Cord; Rimmel Baxter (a former miner) and his wife, both of Batesville; Hugh Moore; W. E. Kinney; Reverend William Harrell Ford, the mayor of Cushman; John Page, who had been a miner as well as a deputy sheriff and marshall in Cushman; Albert T. Wilson, a Sandtown farmer; and farmer John B. Thompson of Cushman. Topics include farming, mining, cotton ginning, prominent local citizens, churches, and life in Independence County.

Biographical / Historical

William D. Spier researched Independence County, Arkansas farming and mining for his 1974 doctoral dissertation, "Farming and Mining Experience: Independence County, Arkansas, 1900-1925," for his Ph.D. in Sociology from Washington University, St. Louis. Spier went on to serve as Assistant Professor of Sociology at St. Louis University, serve in the United States Teacher Corps, and serve as Senior Vice President of Whitman Medical and Executive Director of Ultrasound Technical Services, among other positions.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The William David Spier Interviews tapes were copied from originals loaned to Special Collections in December 1977 by Clyde McGinnis on behalf of William Spier. The transcripts in the collection were created by Jeannie Wyatt for Special Collections in 1978.
