Content Description

Scrapbook documenting the Works Progress Administration Division of Professional and Service Projects' "This Week Pays Your Community" programming in Arkansas in 1940; the week was designed to highlight the benefits of WPA projects to local communities. The scrapbook includes clippings, photographs, programs, speech transcripts, bookmarks, and county committee reports. The scrapbook was compiled by Wilda Plymale, a stenographer in the Fort Smith WPA office, likely for Eva B. Patterson, the District Director. Photograph subjects include sewing rooms, parades in Fort Smith and in Van Buren, a school lunch program in Clarksville, community open house events, and libraries. Libraries with photographs or other related materials featured in the scrapbook include the Booneville Sanatorium Library, the Hartford Public Library, the Norman Public Library, the Leslie Public Library, and the Gravette Public Library.

Biographical / Historical

Wilda Pauline Plymale (1917-1984) was a stenographer in the Works Progress Administration's Fort Smith, Arkansas office in 1940. During World War II, she served as a sergeant in the Women's Army Corps.

Scrapbook is maintained in its original order. It was received without cover boards, and the bookseller also reports having received it in that condition.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Wilda Plymale Works Progress Administration Scrapbook was purchased by Special Collections from Lorne Bair Rare Books of Winchester, Virginia, on October 29, 2021. The bookseller purchased the scrapbook from a fellow book dealer who had purchased it from a Bentonville, Arkansas area flea market seller.

Existence and Location of Copies

The scrapbook was digitized by the bookseller, and tiff files of scrapbook pages are available.

Processing Information

Processed by Katrina Windon; completed in November 2021. Digitization and rehousing of the scrapbook were done by the bookseller, Lorne Bair Rare Books, prior to the materials' sale to Special Collections.
