Content Description

Scrapbooks, photographs, school newspapers, certificates, and other records related to Ellen Compton's time as a student at Bentonville High School from 1952-1956. Some records relate to Compton's involvement with clubs such as the Beta Club, the Order of the Rainbow for Girls, the Future Homemakers of America Federation, and the Arkansas State Student Council Convention. Many scrapbook materials, particularly clippings, relate to the Bentonville High School football team; some relate to the University of Arkansas football team.

Biographical / Historical

Ellen Compton was born August 22, 1938, to Neil and Laurene Compton. She attended Bentonville High School, and then earned a BA and an MA in history from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She worked as a librarian with Fayetteville Public Schools before spending the bulk of her career as a field archivist for the University of Arkansas Special Collections. In recognition of her service to community organizations as well as her professional work, she was given the Washington County Historical Society's Distinguished Citizen Award in 2017 and the Arkansas Historical Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. She passed away March 19, 2020.

Arrangement

Loose materials from the front or back of scrapbooks have been moved to folders that have been labeled accordingly; loose materials interleaved between scrapbook pages have been left in their original locations, so significant care is required in handling scrapbooks. Other materials have been arranged by topic and by format.
