Oral history interview of Ida Elizabeth Turner Bowman, conducted by her granddaughters. She discusses her family history, including her grandfather owning slaves and a plantation in Alabama, and her father’s experience as a soldier in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. She also discusses her experience growing up in Arkansas and Texas.

The recording includes racial slurs.

Biographical / Historical

Ida Elizabeth Turner Bowman (1885-1980) was born in DeWitt, Arkansas, where she lived until the age of 15 and where her father, Andrew Jackson Turner, owned a farm. She later moved to Texas, and then to Oregon, where she married Joseph Bowman on November 11, 1911. Ida Elizabeth Turner Bowman passed away January 8, 1980, in Nampa, Idaho.

The Ida Elizabeth Turner Bowman Oral History was donated to Special Collections by Bowman's granddaughter, Sharon Jarrett of Meridian, Idaho, on March 1, 2009.

Physical Description

The oral history was donated on a compact disc; during processing, CD was burned to a .wav file which is also available in the Special Collections Reading Room.
