Scope and Contents

The collection consists of materials related to Troy Dale Campbell and his service in the U. S. Navy during World War II, including correspondence, journal entries, photographs, and military records. Correspondence is primarily from Campbell to his parents (William Robert and Laura Campbell of Conway, Ark.), and to his brother, Robert Campbell (also of Conway, Ark.); in most cases, the original correspondence is accompanied by edited typescripts created by the donor or donor’s family. Topics include family, especially Campbell's wife, Gertrude, and daughter, Kathryn Grace; the war; weather; military life, including combat, food, church services, and training in San Diego; as well as travel and exploration in the San Diego and Okinawa areas. Locations mentioned include Point Loma, California, where Campbell attended Naval Training School; Bremerton, Washington; San Francisco, California; the Philippines; and Okinawa, Japan.

Biographical / Historical

Troy Dale Campbell was born January 25, 1916, to William Robert and Laura Kate Wyland Campbell. On October 8, 1938, he married Gertrude Grimes Cox in Independence County, Arkansas; the couple had a daughter, Kathryn Grace. Troy Campbell served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Following the war, he moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas, where he owned a dental lab. He passed away April 12, 1998.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Troy Campbell World War II Papers were initially transferred to Special Collections by Campbell's daughter, Kathryn Grover of Rogers, Arkansas, in 2012; they were formally donated to Special Collections by Grover's daughter, Laura McClellan of Little Rock, Arkansas, on March 16, 2018.

Separated Materials

A cigarette lighter that belonged to Troy Campbell and was received as part of the collection has been transferred to the University of Arkansas Museum.

Processing Information

Preliminary processing was begun by Jacob Yount; processing was completed by Katrina Windon in October 2021.
