Biographical / Historical
Alfred Wallace (1809-1856) was an Arkansas merchant and landowner in Crawford and Washington Counties. He founded one of Fayetteville's first general stores in the 1830s, and along with his brother-in-law, A.J. Ward, founded the firm Wallace and Ward in Van Buren around 1844. Due to a bequest from Wallace, the Crawford Institute was later named the Wallace Institute in his honor.
