Content Description
Papers of Mary Sue Herndon, an educator who served on the faculty of the College of Home Economics at Oklahoma State University. The bulk of the materials are photographs and records of her childhood in Nashville, Arkansas, and of her family, including her brothers Cleade and Russell Herndon. Cleade Herndon and Ruth Stephenson Herndon's correspondence is primarily with each other, beginning with their high school friendship and continuing through their courtship and marriage; topics include family life, school, church, chautauquas, and World War I. Cleade Herndon's 1918 correspondence was primarily written to him while he was stationed at Camp Pike, Arkansas with the 162nd Depot Brigade.

Biographical / Historical
Mary Sue Herndon (1920-2012) was an educator who served on the faculty of the College of Home Economics at Oklahoma State University. She held a B. S. in Home Economics, Food and Nutrition from Texas Women’s University and an M.S. from Iowa State University. Herndon, who grew up in Nashville, Arkansas, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Herndon. She had two brothers, Cleade Herndon (who married Ruth Stephenson) and Russell Herndon, and three half-siblings, A. J. Goforth, Will Goforth, and Ruben Goforth.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Mary Sue Herndon Papers were donated to the University of Arkansas Special Collections by Amelia Chamberlain, Museum Director of the Stillwater History Museum at the Sheerar, on behalf of the Museum, on February 4, 2021. The collection had originally been donated to the Stillwater Museum by Charlissa Hunter of Stillwater, Oklahoma, on June 16, 2017. Additional materials were transferred from Chamberlain to the University of Arkansas Special Collections in May 2021.
