Biographical / Historical
The Arkansas Department of Transportation is the state agency responsible for planning and managing the intermodal transportation system, including state roads and highways. The first agency of this type was the Arkansas State Highway Commission, established in 1913; it was followed in 1929 by the Arkansas Highway Department. In 1977, the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department was established, with a broader scope and mission than its predecessors; in 2017, it was renamed the Arkansas Department of Transportation.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Arkansas Department of Transportation Collection was originally loaned to the University of Arkansas College of Engineering for an exhibit. The exhibit was disassembled in 2018; some materials were returned to the Department of Transportation, while these collection materials were donated to Special Collections by the Department of Transportation on January 14, 2021.
