Content Description

Family and personal papers of Catharine Adrianna Forney-Smith, including correspondence, clippings, photographs, and a land grant certificate. Many family members lived in Hope, Hempstead County, and Little Rock, Arkansas. Several folders of correspondence are comprised of a series of letters written to her by her husband, Benjamin F. Forney, while she was visiting relatives in New York. The collection also includes a handwritten organizational history of the Pat Cleburne chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which Forney-Smith founded in 1896.

Biographical / Historical

Catharine Adrianna (C. A.) Forney-Smith was born January 29, 1843, to R.V. and Nancy Holman Green, in Sevier County, Arkansas. Her first husband, Benjamin F. Forney, was a Mexican War and Confederate veteran, businessman, and lawyer who died in 1890. She and Forney lived primarily in Hope, Arkansas. Forney-Smith later remarried, to General James F. Smith, a Confederate veteran and businessman; they originally lived in Howard County, Arkansas, and later moved to Little Rock. Forney-Smith founded the Pat Cleburne chapter and the Arkansas division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC); she also served as first president of the Arkansas division, and was an active member of the national organization. She pased away December 10, 1930.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Catharine Adrianna Forney-Smith Papers were donated to Special Collections by Anne Yarbrough of New Castle, Delaware in October 2020. Forney-Smith was Yarbrough's great-grandmother's first cousin. These materials were first inherited by Yarbrough's great-grandmother, Annie Holman Duckett, then passed to the donor's mother, Anale Newton Yarbrough, before being inherited by Anne Yarbrough in 2003.
