Scope and Content Note

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence from William E. Shinn, James M. Shinn, and John Franklin Shinn to family while they were serving in the Confederate Army; topics include camp conditions; troop movements; and food and supplies. Other materials include documents pertaining to John F. Walker's service as Chaplain of the 53rd Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers; George Wuest business records; and other family correspondence.

Biographical Note

Nathaniel D. Shinn (1819-1892) was born August 27, 1819, to Silas Benjamin Shinn and Elizabeth Little Shinn in Catawba County, North Carolina. He married Hester Elizabeth Brooks Shinn (1822-1899) on November 6, 1837; the couple had several children. Their daughter, Tempy Jane (Jennie), married Jeremiah Freeman Munday. At least two of their sons served in the Confederate Army during the U. S. Civil War: William E. Shinn (1840-1888), and John Franklin Shinn (1844-1862), who was killed at the Battle of Corinth in October 1862.

Members of the Shinn and Munday families were longtime residents of Pope County, Arkansas.

Acquisition Information

The Shinn-Munday Family Papers were donated to the Special Collections Division by Leigh Watson Healy of Havana, Florida, on January 31, 2020. Healy is the daughter of Carolyn Munday, and the letters were passed down to Healy through the Munday family.

Digital Copies Available

Collection materials were digitized by the University of Arkansas Libraries Digital Services Division in March 2020; digitized files will be available to view in the Special Collections Gallery collection in late 2020 or early 2021.
