Scope and Contents
Printed letter dated Washington City, D.C., May 16, 1846, addressed to "Dear Sir" and bearing Archibald Yell's autograph signature, seeking assistance in raising a volunteer regiment in Arkansas [1st Regiment, Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry] for service in the Mexican War. Page 2 contains printed texts of Congressional act of May 13, 1846 "...providing for the prosecution of the existing war..." and of President James K. Polk's proclamation of the same date. Penned at foot of page 1 is previous owner's autograph notation.

Biographical / Historical
Archibald Yell was U. S. Representative of Arkansas' at-large district from 1845-1846 and the second governor of Arkansas from 1840-1844. According to his headstone, he was born in North Carolina on August 9, 1797 and died in Coahuila, Mexico at the Battle of Buena Vista on February 23, 1847.
