The collection consists of materials relating to the Hammock and Tharp families of Arkansas; the bulk of the materials are family photographs, accompanied by manila envelopes labeled by Kathryn Kelly with identifying information and, in many cases, biographical notes. Also included is a published book regarding the family, and printouts from Kelly's Ancestry.com family tree.

Biographical / Historical

Many members of the Hammock and Tharp families (descendants and relatives of James Travis Tharp and Mary Alice Hammock Tharp) lived in Hot Springs County, Pulaski County, and Washington County, Arkansas. Kathryn Alene Bushey Kelly, the donor of the collection, is the great-granddaughter of James Travis Tharp and Mary Alice Hammock Tharp. Her biological parents were Earl Lee Bushey and Julia Estelle Jackson Bushey Cochran (1944-); Kelly was adopted by her great-aunt and uncle, Bobbie Estelle Tharp (1929-1987) and Lloyd Chester Glass (1918-2005). Her maternal grandmother was Julie Alene Tharp Jackson (1925-1987), who was married to Charlie Harold Jackson (1922-1966).

The Hammock-Tharp Family Papers were donated to Special Collections by Kathryn Kelly of Richardson, Texas in September 2020. Kelly is the great-granddaughter of James Travis Tharp and Mary Alice (Hammock) Tharp.
