Scope and Content Note

Copies of 32 ALSs correspondence created or received by John Ross and others, May 3 to November 2, 1839, pertaining to political affairs in the Cherokee Nation, 1838-1840, especially as regards relations between the Western ("Old Settler") and the Eastern ("Emigrant") Cherokees, relations between both groups and the government of the United States, the Takatokah and Tahlequah Councils, and the murder of Elias Boudinot and the John Ridges (1770?-1843, 1803-1839). Other correspondents include Matthew Arbuckle, George Guess, John Rogers, Montford Stokes, Cephas Washburn, and Samuel Austin Worcester.

Also included is photoduplicate of printed document (117p. on 59L Xerox) in which 28 of the 32 letters have been published: U. S. Congress. House. Committee on Indian Affairs. ...Memorial of the delegation of the Cherokee Nation. March 9, 1840. Presented by Mr. Corwin, and referred to the Committee...[Washington] Blair & Rives, printers, 1840.
